Insurer sues to avoid covering fatal extraction blast
An affiliate of insurance company Travelers is suing to decline coverage for a fatal 2023 explosion which investigators found was likely related to butane "honey oil" extraction. Four died in the blast and ensuing fire.
The insurer is asking for a ruling that it is not responsible for defending the defendants -- operators and the landlord -- in subsequent lawsuits. The insurance policy covering the facility explicitly excludes cannabis processing. The defendants, who appear not to have held cannabis licenses, could not be reached for comment.
