With one signature today, President Donald Trump ended the longest-ever government shutdown and effectively outlawed intoxicating hemp products. The nearly $30B industry is now mobilizing to save itself before the ban takes effect in one year.
As many WeedWeek readers know, when the 2018 federal farm bill legalized industrial hemp it also legalized products containing intoxicating cannabinoids manufactured from non-intoxicating components of the hemp plants, such as CBD. Unhampered by federal illegality these products have proven popular and are now roughly as big an industry as the combined state-licensed cannabis markets.
